Campos Dos Goytacazes is both a municipality and also a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The name of the city is derived from the flatness of the surrounding area along with the original inhabitants of the area, who were the Goytacazes Indians. The city often simply goes by the name Campos.

People started settling in the area sometime in the 16th century and the original village gradually grew over the years until in 1835 Campos was declared to be a city. The city, as it is now, is connected to other cities in the region via highways 101 and 356.
