The airport serving Fortaleza is the Pinto Martins Fortaleza International Airport. It is named after an aviator born in the area, Euclides Pinto Martins, who was one of the aviation pioneers who developed the air link between Rio de Janeiro and New York.
The airport shares some of its facilities with the Fortaleza Air Force Base located close to the airport. The airport can trace its history back to the 1930s when it was called Cocorote Airport. Over the years it has been developed and expanded to increase the number and type of flights operating out of the airport. There are a large number of domestic flights available through Azul Brazilian Airlines and Gol Airlines, among others, and also international flights to destinations such as Milan, Rome and Amsterdam.
