Knock or Cnoc Mhuire, as it is generally known to the locals, is a village within the county of Mayo in Ireland. Knock in its native dialect means “The Hill”—the hill of the Virgin Mary.
The village is well-known for the supposed apparition of the Virgin Mary along with John the Evangelist and Saint Joseph on August 21, 1879. Pope John Paul himself visited the Knock Shrine in 1979 to commemorate the hundred year celebration of the apparition. During your visit to the Knock Shrine, check out the altar sculpture which depicts the apparition as it happened a century ago.
