Part of the Gush Dan metropolitan area and Israel’s third largest city, Rishon Lezion Downtown was the second community set up in the Land of Israel. It is a major Israeli wine producer, with the largest winery, Carmel Winery, being found in the area. It also has a history museum and a soldiers’ memorial, with other landmarks comprising the Great Synagogue and the water tower.
The old city contains many original structures from the days of the town’s beginnings. Rishon Lezion Downtown is an important commercial centre and there are some good shopping outlets.
