Bergamo is a city located in the Lombardy region in Italy. The city lies around 40 km from Milan. Just to the north of the city lie the foothills of the Alps. The city began as a Celtic settlement occupied by the Cenomani tribe before it was later taken over by the Romans. It grew in importance when it formed a hub on the Friuli to Raetia military road. There is also a strong musical history associated with the city of Bergamo, which is reflected in some of the buildings that are present in the city. Two of these are the Cappella Colleoni and the Teatro Donizetti. There are actually two centres to the city, the upper and the lower cities.
