Isernia is a town located between the Carpino and Sordino River. It’s on some high ground that rises from 350 to 475 feet. The town maintains the same layout as the original Roman town: a central wide street and right-angled side streets. The name Isernia could have come from a word of Indo-European origin (now lost) or a toponym of Samnite origin.
Habitation is the area goes back 700,000 years. A nearby site was named in Science Magazine as one of the oldest areas of continued habitation by people. The first mention of Isernia is around 295 BC, at which time the site had already been taken over by the Roman Empire.
