Italy Car Rental Tips:
- In many Italian cities, like Florence and Rome, there are many ZLT (Zone of Limited Traffic) areas which also include city historic centers. Non-resident traffic is barred in these areas, so avoid ZLT zones for one wrong turn can lead to heavy fines. Park the car and explore on foot.
- Almost all highway roads in Italy have tolls, have a word with the supplier about what provisions do they offer for toll payments. Usually it is the renter’s responsibility to pay these; tourists are allowed to pay in cash or through their credit cards.

Italy Rent a Car – Frequently Asked Questions
You need an International Driving Permit to drive a car rental in Italy only if your driver’s license is in a non-Latin language. Note that an International Driver’s Permit can be obtained from your home country & it only acts as the official translation to your Driver’s license (DL). In absence of DL, companies refuse to let you take the rental even if you have an IDP.
Usually the car rental companies operating in Italy allow only those drivers to rent cars that are at least 21 and have a minimum of one year’s driving experience, but some companies do allow even 18-20 year olds to rent a car in Italy. However, they charge a young driver surcharge – which is applicable to all who fall under the age of 25.
All the basic insurances like collision damage waiver, theft waiver, and third party liability, etc are offered by the suppliers with the deals; they are the basic insurances, for higher coverage you can buy additional insurances at the rental desk.
You can drive your rental car in Italy with your native driver's license (DL), no matter whether you are US, Canadian or UAE resident. However, note that if your driver's license is not in Roman alphabet, you will need to carry either your International driver's license or your DL's official translation.
