Morelia is the capital of the Mexican state, Michoacan. It is located in the Guayangareo Valley in central Mexico. While there were a few pre-Columbian cultures in the area, there have been no ruins or towns found of these peoples. In 1920s, the Spanish took control of the area and built the city, originally called Valladolid. The name was changed to its current one, Morelia, after the Mexican War of Independence. Many cultural festivals are held in Morelia each year. The first is a music festival that was intended to make the city the equivalent of Salzburg within Latin America. The concert has been going since its inception in 1988 and has more than 40 concerts of various kinds.
