Terceira Airport also known as Lajes Field or Lajes Air Base is a multi-use air field and home to the Portuguese Air Force, a United States Air Force detachment, and Azores Air Zone Command. Terceira Airport is a regional air passenger terminal situated close to Lajes and 15 km northeast of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal. The origin of the airport dates from 1928. Popular airlines operating at the airport include SATA Air Acores, TAP Portugal, Arkefly, and SATA International. Terceira Airport provides provision to 15,000 aircraft including fighters from the US and 20 other allied national yearly. Terceira Airport was one of the two stop and refueling bases for the first transatlantic crossing of non-rigid airships in 1944.
