Portimão is a town and municipality located in the Algarve region. Thius town is located on the Atlantic Coast and is a major tourist hotspot. It is famous for the many sport events that take place here. These include a beach football tournament, the Portugal Match Cup sailing event, the Portuguese Grand Prix P1, which is part of the powerboating international championship and a few motor-sporting events aswell.
The beaches of Portimão are the cmain attraction here and contain sandy stretches peppered with rock formations and caves. The Praia de Rocha, or the rock beach, is the most popular beach here and hosts the annual Mundialito de Futebol de Praia beach football tournament. The beaches here also offer ideal weather conditions for water based activities such as sailing, and various types of surfing. One can also relax in the many restaurants, cafes and bars in the old town.
