Wakefield is the large town in West Yorkshire, England. It sits on the banks of the River Calder and is 14 kilometres away from Leeds and 45 kilometres away from York. Wakefield was called the "Merrie City" in the middle ages. It was the site of a battle during the War of the Roses and was also a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. It developed into an important market town. Amongst the interesting sights in the town are Wakefield Cathedral, Wakefield Town Hall and Wakefield County Hall. The Chantry Bridge, which spans the River Calder, is a pretty sight. The Railway Station was built in the traditional style. A good way to see Wakefield, as well as the areas around the town is to rent a car from VIP Cars.
